Spray Dryer is an industrial dryer used to convert a liquid or slurry into a dry powder by rapidly drying it with hot gas. It’s widely used in food, pharmaceutical, chemical, and ceramic industries for producing fine, uniform powders from liquids.
⚙️ Working Principle of Spray DryerFeed Preparation: Liquid/slurry (containing solids) is pumped into the spray dryer.
Atomization: The feed is sprayed into fine droplets using an atomizer (rotary wheel, pressure nozzle, or two-fluid nozzle).
Drying Chamber: The droplets come into contact with hot air (typically 150–300°C), evaporating moisture instantly.
Dry Powder Formation: Moisture evaporates while the solid forms a dry particle.
Separation: Dried particles are collected via a cyclone separator or bag filter, and air is vented.
| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| Feed Pump | Feeds liquid/slurry into the dryer |
| Atomizer | Converts liquid into fine droplets |
| Drying Chamber | Hot air contact and evaporation |
| Heater | Heats air (steam, electric, or gas) |
| Cyclone Separator | Collects dried powder |
| Exhaust Fan | Removes moist air |
| Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Co-current | Hot air and spray move in the same direction (gentle drying) |
| Counter-current | Air moves opposite to spray (more intense drying) |
| Mixed flow | Combination of both |
Milk powder, coffee, egg powder (Food industry)
Detergents, dyes, pigments
Pharmaceuticals – APIs, excipients
Ceramics – alumina, silica powder
